As the world continues to suffer from the COVID-19 pandemic, we have also witnessed unprecedented devastation linked to our changing climate, from wildfires in California to hurricanes in the South. One thing these two crises have in common is that they can only be solved if nations unite behind the science and collaborate with each other. Unfortunately, global climate action has stalled. We are not on track to reduce emissions sufficiently to prevent dangerous levels of warming.
Together with Dr. Roy Wehrle and Dr. Don Wuebbles, Greenleaf Communities published an op-ed in the Chicago Tribune. In “How the US could lead a Global Climate Compact,” we propose another path that puts climate policy at the center of U.S. foreign policy. Not only could this approach accelerate the global energy transition, but it presents an opportunity for the U.S. to reaffirm a leading role on the global stage and unite nations behind a common goal.
